About Us
Ungru limestone is mined in limestone quarries in Ridala rural municipality, Estonia
The stone is named Ungru after Ungru castle that is located beside the road leading to Rohuküla port and which is one of the grandest and well-known buildings made of that specific stone. This is a slightly dolomitic limestone that was formed approximately 350 million years ago in heavy wave area of the low tropical sea. That is why Ungru limestone has a characteristic structure, the beautiful colours and pattern of which are revealed when the stones are processed.

According to the available information, Ungru limestone has been used as a construction and monumental stone already since the 13th century. The western portal of Ridala church made of Ungru stone and trapezoidal grave markers in the churchyard date back to this century. During the following centuries, Ungru limestone has been used for constructing many Estonian churches and manor buildings. Ungru limestone has also been valued as a monumental stone. The church of Haapsalu Bishop’s Castle, Ridala and Martna church are decorated with Ungru limestone portals, consoles, transverse arches and baptismal stones. There is an Ungru stone sun clock made by sculptor Roman Haavamäe at Haapsalu beach promenade.
When assessing construction details and grave markers made of Ungru limestone that have preserved throughout centuries, we can see that Ungru limestone is extremely weather-resistant
By using contemporary technology and knowledge, Ungru limestone made its comeback in 1990. Our processing plant is located in Väike-Ahli village in Ridala rural municipality, Lääne County.
